The Jacobs Academy Summer Brass Academy is a weeklong opportunity for high school age and undergraduate brass players to work and perform alongside the brass faculty of the Jacobs School of Music. JSoM faculty will provide brass ensemble coaching, masterclasses and topics classes as well as faculty performances. The week will conclude with a concert featuring each participant and faculty members.
Participants will be divided into pre-college and undergraduate collegiate ensembles.
Academy Faculty
American trumpeter Jason Bergman was appointed Associate Professor of Music (Trumpet) at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 2022. He previously served as President of the International Trumpet Guild from 2021-2023. He is a Yamaha Artist and exclusively plays Yamaha trumpets.
Brittany Lasch was appointed assistant professor of music in trombone at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 2023. With a deep commitment to education, Lasch has previously served as faculty at the College of Musical Arts at Bowling Green State University and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. She has also been a featured teacher and performer at summer festivals, including the Sewanee Music Festival and the DC Trombone Workshop, and she has presented master classes at universities across the country as well as internationally.
Gail Robertson is visiting professor of music in euphonium at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She has a distinguished reputation as a euphonium artist and teacher, soloist, and clinician. She has also garnered worldwide attention for leadership, for her work as composer/arranger, and as a musical talent.

Joey Tartell is professor of music in trumpet and chair of the Brass Department at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
Denise Tryon has served as associate professor of music in horn at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music since 2023. She was previously professor of horn at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and the Peabody Instate.
She joined the famed American Horn Quartet as fourth horn in 2019. Previously, she was fourth horn of the Philadelphia Orchestra and held positions with the Detroit, Baltimore, Columbus, and New World Symphonies.
Jeffrey Curnow is professor of music in trumpet at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He previously served as the principal trumpet for the Dallas Symphony and the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Richard Seraphinoff is professor of music in horn and natural horn at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he teaches modern horn, natural horn, and courses in brass literature as well as coaching chamber music.
A $100 non-refundable registration fee is due at registration (credited towards the overall cost of tuition)

Youth Housing (optional, includes meals): $500
Undergraduate Adult Housing (Participants over 18, optional, does not include meals): $350
The posted rate covers housing from check-in on Sunday June 21 to check-out on Saturday June 27.
*Included in the cost of housing is a Linen Package (including pillowcase, top and bottom sheet, two washcloths and towels; blankets and pillows available upon request)
Youth Commuter Meal Plan (optional, for youth participants not living in the dorms)

Commuter Parking: $15
A 1-week parking pass is recommended for commuters. Dormitory residents will receive a complimentary 1-week permit.

Placement Recording
All students must submit a recording for brass ensemble placement. Your placement recording should be of a single piece of repertoire. Provide links to unedited recordings; YouTube preferred. (Note: the audition portal requires a file upload; please paste your YouTube links into a Word document or other text file and upload that file to the portal.)

Your placement recording will not be reviwed if the registration fee is not paid.
