Academic Year

Jacobs Academy students, regardless of program, learn and develop skills that will carry them well into their adult years. Arts studies allow for the opportunity to explore a new creative outlet, support muscle development and motor skills, provide a community through which to build friendships and improve social skills, raise self-confidence, teach patience and discipline, as well as instill a lifelong appreciation for the arts.

To apply, please complete the online registration form located on the program’s webpage; retain your username and password for future access to the account. For those individuals awaiting merit or financial aid decisions, please register in full (e.g., specify your tuition selection) and select the option to delay payment; a completed registration is necessary to be apply any form of scholarship.

In exceptional circumstances, Jacobs Academy students or families may enroll in a pre-arranged payment plan by contacting the Office of Jacobs Academy (musicsp@iu.edu). It is important to note, payment plans must be arranged for prior to the start date of the program and a down-payment is due upon enrollment. Please contact the Office of Jacobs Academy for more information.

Upon submitting the online registration, the participant can expect to receive an email receipt from IU Conferences (iuconfs@iu.edu). If you failed to receive the receipt or remain unsure whether your payment was received, please reach out to the Office of Jacobs Academy (musicsp@iu.edu).

If interested in a select program and you find that the registration deadline has since passed, please contact the Office of Jacobs Academy (musicsp@iu.edu). Often, with director approval and space availability, you’ll find most programs are willing to accept late applications. Payment must be made at the time of enrollment; participants may not engage in program activities until this has been addressed.

Yes, programs want to keep families up to date as far as reminders and announcements are concerned. These will be sent to the primary email address listed on the online program registration.

Class and rehearsal schedules can be found on the program webpage. If you have any additional questions, please contact the program director. Programs offering private lessons will be scheduled according to instructor-student availability. After registering for the program, a program representative will reach out to confirm a lesson schedule.

Most programs culminate in an end of semester performance, which is found on the individual webpages.

Summer Programs

As our programs have limited capacity, it is important to note that your spot within the program can only be secured by full payment.

Need-based financial aid is not available for summer programs. Merit scholarships are given on a case by case basis and are done at the discretion of the program director.

Jacobs Academy does not offer payment plans for summer programs as they are considered recreational. Payment must be made by the listed payment deadline found on the program webpage.

It is important to note that university housing provides very basic accommodation, click here to learn more about our dormitories.

Unless otherwise indicated via the program website, students are placed in double-rooms while adults are placed in single-room environments. Included in the cost of room and board are the following:

Linen package: Top and bottom sheet, pillowcase, and two towels. A blanket is available upon request; please call the Front Desk of the dorm in which the participant is residing. ATTN: The Linen Package does not provide pillows or washcloths.

Parking permit: A complimentary permit is included in room and board costs for adult participants residing in the dorms. Unless advised otherwise, participants should not request a permit on the online registration form; they should input their vehicle information where prompted to allow us to best prepare for your stay.

While placement varies per program, participants are placed in dormitories located in the Southeast neighborhood as these are closest to the IU Jacobs School of Music campus. These dorms include Forest Quad, Read Hall, Spruce Hall, Wells Quad, and Willkie Quad.

Dorm amenities: heating and cooling, carpeting, bed(s), desk, wardrobe.

Youth, check-in: Program representatives are set up in the dormitory lobby. Upon check-in, students will receive detailed program information, room assignments, and an all-access card which doubles as the room key and meal card. Check-out: Please await email updates or contact the program director for further instructions, as this varies from program to program.

Adults: There are no formal check-in or check-out procedures for adult participants. Dormitories are open Monday through Friday, 8 AM-5PM and 10AM-12PM on weekends. If your arrival time falls outside these hours, please call the dormitory Front desk number for further instruction:

For those requesting a complimentary 1-week parking permit, please be prepared to share the following vehicle information: make, model, and license plate number.

Please contact the program director to find out the check-in procedure. Requests will be considered up until the payment deadline, please visit the program webpage for exact dates. Should the request be deemed acceptable, certain charges will apply to accommodate the special arrangements.

Jacobs Academy takes the supervision of your child very seriously. During program activities, the supervision of your child is overseen by program faculty who are interacting with the children via lessons, groups lessons, etc. Program counselors are charged with supervising the children as they move across campus from one activity to the next; they are also responsible for dormitory supervision. Rest assured; program staff is available 24/7 to ensure the comfort, safety and needs of the participants are met.

Programs that offer non-degree credit (1-3 credits) are the IU Summer Kodaly Institute and the Retreat for Violin and Viola Teachers. Your interest can be conveyed via the online registration form; the Office of Jacobs Academy will be in touch regarding next steps. In addition to standard course tuition, the interested applicant will be additionally charged per credit hour by the bursar. Participants residing on-campus are given a complimentary 1-week parking permit by the University Residence Halls. These permits allow access to the following areas: Campus Housing (CH)

  • Any CH zone (CH1-3) or ST space
  • 24-hour CH spaces from 5PM Friday to 11PM Sunday
  • Any non-24-hour EM-P, EM-S, ST, or numbered Reserved spaces after 5PM on weekdays and all-day Saturday and Sunday
  • Parking Garages by scanning permit, beginning at 5PM until posted closing hours on weekdays and all-day Saturday and Sunday
  • Any disabled (D) space between 5PM-7AM with a state issued ADA hangtag or plate
  • 24-hour CH paces from 5PM Friday to 11AM Sunday

Permits purchased via the online registration forms are assigned  permits. This allows access to the following areas: Employee Premium (EM-P)

  • Allow parking in any EM-P, EM-S, CH3, or ST space
  • Any garages, including EM-P in garages
  • Any non-24-hour, numbered reserved (R) spaces between 5PM-7AM weekdays and all-day Saturday and Sunday
  • Any disabled (D) space between 5PM-7AM with a state issued placard/tag or license plate
  • 24-hour CH spaces from 5PM Friday to 11PM Sunday

All Jacobs Academy programs are subject to cancellation due to insufficient enrollment. All programs cancelled for this reason will be refunded for the full order amount.

If a participant decides not to attend a program prior to the program start date a full refund minus a $70 cancellation fee will be processed.

If a participant decides not to attend after the beginning of a program a 50% refund will be processed. There will be no refund if the cancellation is requested after the halfway point of the program.

With the exception of the Natural Horn Workshop, Jacobs Academy does not offer instrument rentals; however, it can provide recommendations for local sources. Please contact musicsp@iu.edu for more information.

The closest major airport is Indianapolis International Airport (IND), about an hour drive from Bloomington, IN.

If you are flying into Indianapolis, there is a shuttle service to Bloomington through GO Express. The shuttle drop off and pick up points are hotels and dorms on or close to campus (some are listed below). To book a shuttle or view the service schedule, visit the Go Express website. There are also car rentals available on the lower level of Indianapolis International Airport.

Book a hotel close to Indiana University or enjoy a stay in one of the many airbnbs in Bloomington, IN.

Bloomington has public transit via the bus line and Uber/Lyft are easy to call anywhere in town. If you are taking the bus, the Jacobs School is easily accessed via the 3 College Mall/East 3rd Street line. Stop H takes you right to the Jacobs School.
