Jacobs Baroque Summer Intensive

Dates: June 1 - 6, 2026

The Jacobs Baroque Summer Intensive (JBSI) is a week-long program for professional and pre-professional instrumentalists in baroque performance practice, with faculty drawn from the Historical Performance Institute of the Jacobs School of Music. Open to players of both modern and period instruments, this program is a comprehensive exploration of baroque style and repertoire.

The program includes:

  • daily masterclasses
  • topics classes in Bach aria obbligati, French baroque style, 17th century Italian ornamentation, and more
  • period instrument technique classes for baroque-curious modern instrumentalists, with loaner instruments and bows available
  • chamber ensembles
  • faculty and student performances

Faculty

Ingrid Matthews

Ingrid Matthews is professor of practice in historical performance: baroque violin at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.A graduate of IU, where she studied with Josef Gingold and Stanley Ritchie, Matthews is one of today’s most respected baroque violinists.

joanna blendulf

Joanna Blendulf is professor of music in baroque cello/viola da gamba at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Blendulf has performed and recorded with leading period-instrument ensembles through the United States and abroad. She currently also serves as co-principal cellist and principal viola da gamba player of the Portland Baroque Orchestra.

meg owens

In demand as a performer on historical oboes, Margaret Owens has appeared with many of North America's period-instrument ensembles. She teaches modern oboe at George Mason University and is the founder and director of George Mason's new baroque chamber orchestra, in addition to her appointment with the Historical Performance Institute at the Jacobs School of Music.

kathie stewart

Kathie Stewart is an academic specialist in historical performance and historical keyboard curator at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She is also a founding member and principal flutist of the Grammy Award winning Apollo's Fire: the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra.

elisabethwright

Elisabeth Wright is an emeritus faculty member in harpsichord of the Historical Performance Institute of the IU Jacobs School of Music. She is noted for her versatility as soloist and chamber musician and for her expertise in the art of basso continuo improvisation.

2026 Fees & Deadlines

Fees

  • Tuition: $1000
    • A $100 non-refundable registration fee is due at registration (credited towards the overall cost of tuition)
    • If you do not wish to pay tuition in full at the time of initial registration, please do not select the tuition option prior to completing registration, and select only the registration fee. Please be aware that tuition must be paid in full by the payment deadline in order to participate in the program.
  • Housing and Parking (optional): $350
    • The posted rate covers housing from check-in on Sunday May 31 to check-out on Saturday June 6. Additional night may be purchased for an additional fee.

*Included in the cost of housing is a Linen Package (including pillowcase, top and bottom sheet, two washcloths and towels; blankets and pillows available upon request) and a complimentary 1-week parking permit.

  • Commuter Parking: $15
    • A 1-week parking pass is recommended for commuters. Dormitory residents will receive a complimentary 1-week permit.

REGISTRATION FOR SUMMER 2026 WILL OPEN IN DECEMBER 2025

  1. Eligibility: Accepting professional and pre-professional instrumentalists of both modern and period instruments.
    • Acceptance to the program is contingent on a faculty evaluation of experience.
  2. Registration: Complete the online registration form and pay the Non-Refundable Registration Fee ($100) and tuition.
    • If you do not wish to pay tuition in full at the time of initial registration, please do not select the tuition option prior to completing registration, and select only the registration fee. Please be aware that tuition must be paid in full by the payment deadline in order to participate in the program.
    • Save your login information so you can easily go back to edit your registration/tuition payment.
