Jacobs Academy Summer Vocal Intensive

Dates: June 29 - July 17, 2026

A transformative, three-week, program designed for aspiring vocalists, age 18-25, seeking to refine their artistry, technique and stage presence in a focused and inspiring environment. Participants will engage in voice lessons, vocal coaching, diction classes, stage movement, opera scenes, masterclasses and more with members of the world-renowned Jacobs School of Music voice faculty.

A maximum of 30 participants will be selected to participate in the inaugural year of this program, based on their submission materials.

Faculty

Bryan Hymel

Bryan Hymel’s career highlights include debuts and return engagements at the world’s most accomplished opera houses and festivals. An exclusive recording artist for Warner Classics, his first solo album, Héroïque, debuted at number 3 on the Billboard Classical Music chart. Hymel currently serves as a associate professor of voice at the Jacobs School of Music.

Heidi Grant Murphy is an American operatic soprano and academic voice teacher. A member of the Metropolitan Opera since 1989, she has also served on the voice faculty at the Jacobs School of Music since 2011.

Pianist and vocal coach, Allan Armstrong, is associate professor of music in voice at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he specializes in art song literature and opera coaching. He is also the official accompanist of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions for both the Colorado/Wyoming District and the Rocky Mountain Region.

Gary Arvin is currently a professor of voice at the Jacobs School of Music. He has also served as a coach/assistant conductor for the Houston Grand Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Cincinnati Opera, and the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria. Mr. Arvin has also served as accompanist for singers in recitals throughout the United States, Europe, Asia.

Michael Shell is associate professor of music in voice at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. His "visionary" and "masterful storytelling" (Opera News) is steadily leading him to be one of the most sought after directors in the United States. His "thoughtful and detailed score study" (Opera Today) is shown in character development and relationships onstage as well as the complete visual world he creates. He also serves as the resident stage director for IU Jacobs School of Music Opera and Ballet Theater.

Greek soprano Irini Kyriakidou has performed in leading opera houses such as La Fenice, Opéra national de Paris and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden under the baton of renowned conductors including Riccardo Muti, Nello Santi and Michel Passon. She is a Professor of Voice at Loyola University New Orleans, where she also teaches German, Italian and French diction classes, as well as directing the operas and opera scenes programs.

2026 Fees & Deadlines

Fees

  • Tuition: $3500
    • A $100 non-refundable registration fee is due at registration (credited towards the overall cost of tuition)
    • Do not select a tuition or housing option until you have received notification of acceptance.
  • Housing (optional): $1125
    • The posted rates covers housing from check-on Sunday June 28 to check-out on Saturday July 18. Additional nights may be purchased for an additional fee.

*Included in the cost of housing is a Linen Package (including pillowcase, top and bottom sheet, two washcloths and towels; blankets and pillows available upon request) and a complimentary 1-week parking permit. Parking permits for the additional weeks will incur a separate cost.

  • Commuter Parking: $15/week
    • A 3-week parking pass at a total cost of $45 is recommended for commuters. Dormitory residents will receive a complimentary 1-week permit but will need to purchase a permit for the additional 2 weeks.

Deadlines

  • Prescreen/Registration: February 9, 2026
  • Notification of Acceptance: February 20, 2026
  • Confirm Acceptance: March 2, 2026
  • Full payment due for accepted participants: March 13, 2026

Audition Requirements

All applicants must complete the registration form, pay the non-refundable registration fee and submit recordings of two contrasting works.

Provide links to unedited recordings; YouTube links are accepted. (Note: the audition portal requires a file upload; please paste your YouTube links into a Word document or other text file and upload that file to the portal.)

*Current or already accepted Jacobs School of Music vocal majors are exempt from submitting audition recordings but must still register and pay the non-refundable registration fee by the February 9 deadline.

How to apply

  1. Eligibility: Accepting undergraduate, graduate and young professional vocalists age 25 and under.
  2. Registration: Complete the online registration form and pay only the Non-Refundable Registration Fee - $100.
    • Your audition will not be reviewed if the registration fee is not paid.
    • Do not pay tuition until you have received your letter of acceptance.
    • Save your login information so you can easily go back to edit your registration/tuition payment upon acceptance.
  3. Audition: Upload audition materials through the Jacobs School of Music Audition Portal. Please create a guest account if you do not already have one and select the "Jacobs Academy - Summer Vocal Intensive" option. (If you have issues accessing the audition portal, please email musicsp@iu.edu)

Once you have completed the previous steps, please submit the Participant Agreement Form
