REGISTRATION OPEN FOR SUMMER 2026!

The Summer Harp Academy (SHA) is a week-long comprehensive program comprised of sessions designed to develop the versatile harpist. Harpists will be able to hone their performance and professional skills under the instruction of acclaimed pedagogues Elzbieta Szmyt and Sarah Bullen. The SHA includes a faculty recital, daily masterclasses, private lessons, lectures, classes, and harp ensemble. The program concludes with both an ensemble recital and student recital. Practice time and private instruction will also be available throughout the program. The Summer Harp Academy is open to intermediate through advanced harpists ages 12–26.

Elzbieta Szmyt is professor of music in harp, chair of the Harp Department, and director of the Pre-College Harp Program at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

Sarah Bullen is adjunct professor of music in harp at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

Bullen was appointed principal harpist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) in 1997 and held the position for 24 years, until her retirement in 2021. She began her orchestral career in 1981 as principal harpist of the Utah Symphony, and from 1987 to1997, she was principal harpist of the New York Philharmonic.

Dr. Fan-Fen Tai is the director of the Jacobs Harp Academy at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, where she nurtures students of all ages and levels. A prizewinning performer and dedicated educator, she has earned critical acclaim for her dazzling interpretations of the harp repertoire—The Herald‑Times praised her “pleasure of a [Handel] harp concerto…played dazzlingly,” while the Tucson Citizen lauded her “virtuoso tour de force” and “intricate pedaling, coloristic nuance and kaleidoscopic mood.” on her performance of the Ginastera harp concerto. Dr. Tai holds a Doctor of Music degree from Indiana University (2009), a Master of Music from the University of Arizona, and a Bachelor of Music from Taipei National University of Arts. Her students have garnered top prizes in competitions worldwide, and she has appeared as concerto soloist with ensembles including the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, Asian Youth Orchestra, U of Arizona and IU Orchestras.

Beyond her performing career, Dr. Tai has made contributions as a chamber coach, ensemble director, and competition juror. She also collaborates with composers on creating new works, and advocates for community engagement, performing constantly in her local communities to bring harp music beyond the concert hall.

2026 Fees and Deadlines

Fees

  • Tuition: $1150
    • A $100 non-refundable registration fee is due at registration (credited towards the overall cost of tuition)
    • If you do not wish to pay tuition in full at the time of initial registration, please do not select the tuition option prior to completing registration, and select only the registration fee. Please be aware that tuition must be paid in full by the payment deadline in order to participate in the program.
  • Youth Housing (optional; includes meal plan): $650
    • The posted rate covers housing from check-in on Saturday June 6 to check-out on Sunday June 14. Youth participants are not allowed to stay additional nights.
  • Adult Housing and Parking (optional): $450
    • The posted rate covers housing from check-in on Saturday June 6 to check-out on Sunday June 14. Additional nights may be purchased for an additional fee.

*Included in the cost of housing is a Linen Package (including pillowcase, top and bottom sheet, two washcloths and towels; blankets and pillows available upon request)

  • Youth Commuter Meal Plan (optional, for participants not living in the dorms)
    • $150 (only includes lunch)
  • Commuter Parking: $15
    • A 1-week parking pass is recommended for commuters. Dormitory residents will receive a complimentary 1-week permit.

How to Apply

  1. Eligibility: Accepting intermediate to advanced students aged 12-26
  2. Registration: Complete the online registration form and pay the Non-Refundable Registration Fee ($100) and tuition.
